A Cup of Tea, A Journey of Connection | 一杯のお茶
What if a single cup of tea could connect you to centuries of tradition, spark fresh ideas, and foster meaningful connections? In this post, I’ll share how blending culture with fresh ideas has shaped my journey—and how it can transform the way you see business and life.

From Matcha to Mindfulness: A Personal Journey with Tea
In today’s fast-paced world, blending culture with creativity can help us make meaningful connections. I’ve learned that it’s not just about incorporating cultural elements into what we do but about understanding and respecting their true meaning. My journey has been shaped by Japanese culture, which has played a key role in guiding the development of Kiki’s T House.
When I moved from Japan to Chicago, I noticed that most people were familiar with only a few aspects of Japanese culture, like sushi or anime. Many were unaware of the traditions surrounding Japanese tea or the role of mindfulness in daily life. Over the years, I’ve seen a growing interest in Japanese culture, typically through foods and drinks like matcha. However, the focus has always been on understanding the richness of these traditions and connecting with them in a way that goes beyond trends.
Tea as a Bridge to Wellness and Connection
A while ago, I started a tea club with a good friend who loved matcha. We’d often chat about how difficult it is to find good matcha at a reasonable price in the US. To help him expand his tea journey, I introduced him to other types of Japanese tea and shared the stories behind them—about the farmers, the health benefits, and how tea fits into Japanese culture.
He quickly became interested in other teas and even learned how to reuse the tea leaves (Chagara: 茶殻) creatively. What started as a simple love for matcha turned into a wellness journey, helping him manage his blood sugar levels despite his family history of diabetes. It’s a reminder that cultural practices can make a real difference in everyday life.
How Culture Shapes the Heart of My Business
For me, culture is what gives a business its heart. Values like mindfulness, harmony, and sustainability are a big part of how I run Kiki’s T House. They guide not only the way we share the joys of tea and artwork but also how we connect with the people who join our community.
Blending Fresh Ideas with Timeless Tradition
Combining fresh ideas with tradition doesn’t require us to forget the past. It’s about discovering enjoyable ways to utilize the things we’ve always done and adapting them to our current world. Take Japanese green tea, for example. It’s not just a drink—it’s part of a lifestyle. From reusing tea leaves in recipes to incorporating them into wellness routines, there’s so much potential to explore.
The Japanese concept of mottainai (もったいない: reducing waste) is another big influence on how I approach my business. By combining traditional values with new ideas, we can create something innovative and meaningful.

Continuing the Journey: Blending Culture and Creativity
Blending culture with creativity has been a personal journey that continues to evolve. By integrating the values and traditions of Japanese culture into what I do, I hope to share something that brings people together and sparks curiosity. It’s not about making something grand, but about offering small moments that people can connect with in their own way.
